New Hampshire Cool Lavenders

Ahhh, beautiful. One of those images we see regularly across any body of water here in NH. Late afternoon, low sun in the sky, shining through misty moisture-laden air. The hillsides in the distance provided a layering of shadows and evergreen textures. As artists, we know the the farther away the mountain is, the cooler the color temperature becomes. Because the distance between you and the object has moisture-laden atmosphere which makes things in the distance appear both cooler, smaller and out of focus. This effect is known as aerial perspective.  Incorporating these details in a painting will make a realistic painting style even more real. An impressionistic piece also relies on these rules to paint an impression of the sense of distance. ( a spot near Spofford Lake, NH)
